Old and new mastercard logo

Has anyone already noticed that MasterCard has rebranded? I got it today and I’m anything else than impressed.

The two well-known circles are still here but the interlocking has changed to simple overlapping. What’s confusing to me is that the overlapping parts are not interlaced anymore but inverted.

The third and bigger circle on top is filled with semi-transparent gradients which make it really hard to print because they need rasterization.

All in all the logo seems more like they wanted to go with a trend instead of upholding brand awareness.

What MasterCard says about their new logo:

The three circles reflect the company’s unique, three-tiered business model as a franchisor, processor and advisor.

Questionable if anyone of us is really interested in MasterCard’s number of business tiers. I’m not and I guess most of you think same.
